Responsible breeders understand the importance of pairing the right puppy with the right home. Compatibility in a home is important as it promotes harmony! A highly energetic, excitable puppy will thrive in an active home and a calm, tolerant and forgiving puppy will thrive in a quieter setting. No matter the puppy, they all need proactive training in order to learn how to live with people. By having a better understanding of their puppy's individual traits through the observation of assessment videos, puppy owners will be better equipped to meet the needs of their specific puppies. Our Happy Puppy Assessments work hand in hand with The Happy Puppy Training Kit to assist families in raising the dogs of their dreams.
Our responsible breeder clients are incredibly dedicated to their puppies and spend a great deal of time with them each and every day, giving them an opportunity to get to know their individual traits. What we have discovered during assessments is the behaviour our breeders are seeing are optimal behavioural traits which puppies will exhibit when they are comfortable with their surroundings with those that are familiar to them. The optimal behavioural traits our breeder clients see are also quite visible with new stimuli as there is strength in numbers however we often see more of a baseline temperament response in puppies when exposed to stimuli individually! We believe that a combination of observations, both optimal and baseline, will better assist our breeder clients when pairing up the right homes for their individual puppies. What puppy owners observe from their puppies differs once they bring them home which is what we refer to as baseline temperament. Puppies are frequently finding themselves in new places with new people and the temperament they exhibit at that time is a baseline temperament, which is what we observe and work with during our Happy Puppy Assessments. The push to socialize puppies early on is high yet not knowing how to do so in a proper way can cause more harm than good. Our Happy Puppy Assessment video demonstrates to owners what they will see in their individual puppy when he or she is feeling a little uncertain about a new stimuli and how to assist that puppy to gain confidence in new environments. This video combined with our Introduction to Canine Body Language Booklet drives home the importance of understanding their puppy's language which will improve safety within homes and communities!
Puppy Temperament Testing can be gentle and kind and the assessors conducting the assessments should have a great deal of behavioural knowledge with the same theoretical beliefs as the breeders that are employing them. Because of this, we will be formulating a supervised version for our long distance clients to implement whereby assessors will be guided carefully in the implementation of our exercises and videos will be uploaded for assessment report purposes. We look forward to working with some of you to develop this long distance platform! Perhaps some of you can join up, learn the assessment process and support each other in temperament testing in the future with our guidance!

“Recently, Cantope had the pleasure of viewing the videos taken during temperament testing of the Cantope puppies. Their gentle, safe approach to determining the puppies’ personalities will greatly assist breeders in placing puppies in suitable homes. Further, the Windy Willows written assessments take the puppy training up a notch by guiding the new family in specific training techniques geared to the individual puppy.”
